What is it about? Amy, a pretty, normal teen in the near future, has an excruciating choice to make. Her parents are voluntarily being frozen so that they may travel light years away, and help humans develop a new place to live. Once her mother is frozen, her father lets her have a choice: to leave them behind, and go on with her life with her aunt and uncle. Or, she can choose to be frozen, too. Her mother needn’t know until hundreds of years in the future, when she is thawed.

Amy makes a choice that I can’t imagine having to make. But, as she says, “…all my parents ever wanted was to be a part of the first manned interstellar exploratory mission, and all I ever wanted was to be with them.”

And so begins Amy’s journey. We jump to Elder, a boy living on the ship Godspeed, where Amy and her parents are frozen in the future. Drawn to her bright red hair, Elder selfishly unplugs her, and immediately regrets it. But it’s too late, and Amy is brought back to life without her parents and without the new world she was promised. The residents of the Godspeed are wary of her, and some may even have horrible plans for her. Elder becomes her friend, and eventually, she falls for him. When other bodies start being unplugged, thawing and killing them, Amy and Elder begin a dangerous search for the killer and their motives. This book has a shocking conclusion you won’t want to miss.

Review: First of all, this was a beautifully written book. I felt so claustrophobic the entire time, it was crazy. You really empathize with Amy as she tries to push the boundaries of the ship, without ever being able to leave the same rooms and corridors. Elder is sweet and a worthy crush for Amy. This book was so good, I had to go out the night I finished it and by the sequel, A Million Suns. Even if you think you are not a sci-fi fan, I think you’ll like this book.
