What’s it about? The Scorpio Races is set in a far off place, presumably the British Isles, in the not-to-distant past. On this island, wild water horses are caught from the sea and raced for tourists, fame and fortune. These water horses are dangerous, blood thirsty creatures that very often rip off arms of riders or drag them to a watery death.

Puck, a teen orphaned girl who lives with her brothers, needs money. Her family home will be foreclosed on and they’ll have nowhere to live if she doesn’t come up with the money to save it. Sean, another teen orphan, is the four-time winner of the Scorpio races. He needs the money to buy his freedom.  When Puck enters the race against the wishes of all of the men on the island, Sean alone stands up for her, even though he doesn’t think she has a chance in the world of winning.

They begin a quiet romance bred on respect and dangerous horse races, and as Puck gets faster, the pair must balance their budding relationship and their competing goals. This book is beautifully written and a touching story. It also has one of the best opening lines I’ve ever read:

It is the first day of November and so, today, someone will die.

Gives you shivers, right?

Should you read it? Yes! What a wonderful, powerful book. Puck’s courage to fight for her home, Sean’s quiet love for his Water Horse Corr and his growing admiration for Puck – it all adds up to a great book. Read it!

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. Typically I am drawn to a faster pace book with a lot of action, but this was beautifully written and was able to keep me more than intrigued! I actually listened to this on a CD while driving to and from work and was so pulled into the story that I didn’t want to leave my car! Thanks again for ANOTHER great recommendation!

I loved this book, too! I kind of want to listen to it on CD just to hear the accents 😉 I’m glad you enjoyed it! Do I remember you saying it was going to be made in to a movie? That would be awesome.
