Book Review – Scarlet

Scarlet

What’s it about? Scarlet is the second book in the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer.

No, not this Marissa Mayer:

This Marissa Meyer. Notice the ‘e’ in her last name. She is the author of Cinder, the retelling of Cinderella as a futuristic cyborg. I know, you’re brain is exploding in candy, but seriously it’s pretty great. See my prior review by clicking on the book cover below:

Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles Series #1)

I was lucky enough to go to the Scarlet launch party in Tacoma, WA a few months back with my friend JD. We had a fine time meeting Marissa and sampling some delightful french treats. I spoke to her dad in line while waiting to get my book signed, and he was so proud of her and said such nice things about Scarlet. It was very sweet.

Now, back to the book. Scarlet is a continuation of the story where we met Cinder and dreamy Prince Kai. In case you’ve yet to pick up the first book, I won’t reveal too many details. I will tell you, however, that in book two we meet Scarlet (get it? Red Riding Hood? Of course you do) on a small farm in futuristic France. She meets her wolf, the handsome and dangerous street fighter named Wolf, and adventure ensues.

Should you read it? Yes! This is a great book for adults and teens alike – especially younger teens. There’s nothing too shocking in the series so far that would make the mom of a twelve year old cringe, so I like to recommend this series to pretty much everyone. I look forward to book three! I really liked the character of Cinder, and the super evil moon Queen trying to take over Earth. I wonder which fairy tale character will join the story next?

My youngest – 11, loved it (so did the old 15 yo.) But when I was asking if Wolfe was handsome, as *I* would have written him, she said “No mom, he’s a bad boy,” lol. But yes, everyone should read this series. Even if I don’t have time to.

I would agree, Jennifer. My twelve year old read Cinder and Scarlet and they were both completely appropriate for her!
