Book Review – Obsidian Mirror by Catherine Fisher

Obsidian Mirror

What’s it about? Obsidian Mirror is an exciting time travel/steam punk/fantasy romp by the super talented Catherine Fisher.

Jake is a troubled kid stashed away at an elite Swiss boarding school. His mother is gone, and his father has gone missing while in the company of his godfather, the widower Venn. After being expelled and escorted home by his teacher, Wharton, they discover that Venn is hiding something deep in his old mansion – an Obsidian mirror that he claims can send people back in time – including Jake’s father.

But Venn isn’t the only person looking to use the mirror’s great and dark powers. A great white wolf and a futuristic despot have traveled back in time to find the mirror, and young runaway Sarah seems to be looking for more than just a roof over her head. Throw in Summer, a Shee (faery) Queen whose vengeful love for Venn makes her a dangerous enemy, and you have one heck of an adventure. Will Jake find a way to use the mirror and travel back in time to save his father? Will Venn be able to protect the mirror and use it to find his dead wife in the past?

Should you read it? Yes! This is a complicated, exciting tale for fans of sci-fi, adventure and fantasy. Fisher does a wonderful job of weaving multi-genre elements in to her stories. For fans of more intricate fiction (like Baggott’s Pure series), this is the author for you.
