Book Review – BURN, by Julianna Baggott

Burn

Burn is the third and final book in the PURE Trilogy. Learn more about the first books, PURE and FUSE.

The PURE Trilogy is set in a post-apocalyptic America after a deadly nuclear holocaust. Pressia, a precocious teen, lives with her grandfather in the desolate after. Like most of the wretches who survived the bomb outside of the biodome, Pressia is scarred and disfigured. But the flame of hope burns brightly within her, and when she meets dome runaway Partridge, she knows he’s someone special. She rescues him and sets a series of events in motion that changes the face of the broken landscape forever. In this final installment, everything that Pressia, Partridge, Bradwell and El Capitan have fought for will either come to a head, or burn to ashes at their feet. Who will survive? And, who will sacrifice themselves for their vision of the future?

Hands down, this is the best book I have read in years. Baggott’s books only get better with each installment. I blew through more than 400 pages in two days, barely able to take a breath for about the last quarter of it. This is YA at it’s best – in that it’s a book anyone of any age group would love. The writing is flawless, the characters are profoundly tortured and hopeful all at the same time, and the setting is big enough to be a main character itself. There are no cheap and easy endings here, nor are we as readers frustrated with how things turned out. Satisfying and thought-provoking, this is one of the best series of books I’ve ever read. In my life. Really.
